Stable release 0.9.12 · pre-1.0
Morkyn
The name is Morkyn. It is also written Mørkyn.
A local-first AI RPG. The language model narrates the turn. The game keeps the world.
What it is
Morkyn, also written Mørkyn, is a role-playing game you run on your own machine and play in a browser tab. Each turn, a language model writes what happens. That prose is not the save file. SQLite stores the player, the inventory, the NPCs, the events, the summaries, and the continuity of a long campaign. The model can propose a change. The game decides what is true.
That split is the reason to build an AI RPG this way. The scene can be generative, and a long playthrough can still remember who you are, what you carry, and where you have been. It was formerly published as the AI RPG Consistency Prototype.
How a session works
- You set a character and a world, then play turn by turn.
- A local model through Ollama or llama.cpp can narrate. An OpenAI-compatible API is optional if you want a cloud model instead.
- The narrator sees a bounded slice of the campaign. Older play is consolidated so a long game does not have to resend its entire history every turn.
- Dice, movement, and other world facts are resolved by the game and written down. Rewinding a save can reproduce the same server-side rolls.
- You can play on this machine, on a LAN, or through a trusted VPN.
What you can already play
The latest stable release is 0.9.12. It is a playable prototype with enough systems for a long session, and it is not a finished 1.0.
- Browser interface, with no separate frontend build.
- Character and world setup, inventory, NPCs, events, and campaign save slots.
- Places you can enter and leave, such as shops and inns, with hours and a keeper who stays the same person.
- Content packs for skills, items, and tables, dropped in as data instead of code changes.
- A danger model for travel, waiting, and rest that accounts for wounds, load, terrain, weather, and time of day.
Where the work is now
The present priority is bug fixes and optimization. New features are expected as Morkyn moves forward. They are not what this stretch is for.
On a local 8B model, a full narrated turn has been measured in minutes on the test machine, while the world update underneath that narration is much faster. Making turns cheaper, more consistent, and less likely to contradict the save is the work in front of the project. Screenshots are not part of this page yet.
Run the stable release
Version 0.9.12 is one launcher file. Put it in an empty folder and run it. The launcher clones the repository, builds a private Python environment, installs dependencies, and starts the game. Later runs can check GitHub and will ask before updating. You need Git and Python 3.11 or newer. Windows, Linux, and macOS each have a launcher on the release.
The license is PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0. The game is free to download and play for noncommercial use.
